Invisible yet Essential Wedding Day Accessories

Gorgeous gown…check! Stunning veil…check! Fabulous jewelry…check! Lovely brides, we know you’ve been busy creating your amazing wedding day ensemble. And while we know you’ve carefully selected all the obvious major items, we have a few suggestions for a handful of hard-working, behind-the-scenes accessories that are guaranteed to make your day even better!

Foot Petals
Rendering even the most torturous shoes comfortable, Tip Toes Foot Petals are a must for the fashionista bride who considers her knock-‘em-dead heels a crucial part of her wedding day attire. Virtually invisible once inside your shoe, these flower-shaped ball-of-foot cushions help prevent calluses from forming, protect bones and tissue, and cushion the sensitive ball-of-foot area…perfect to keep the bride in tip-top shape and on the dance floor all night!

Hollywood Fashion Tape
Make your wedding day wardrobe malfunction free with the oh-so-fabulous Hollywood Fashion Tape. Think of it as super-sonic double-sided tape that keeps your strapless gown from sliding out of place or prevents your halter from revealing too much. The tape is specially formulated to be gentle on skin and is hypoallergenic, as well as being safe for fabrics, leaving nary a residue! This busy little accessory has been a secret of the stars for perfectly put-together fashion for years and now it can bring you a worry-free wedding day…at least as far as keeping everything in place in your gown!

Hollywood Deodorant Removing Sponge
An ingenious yet long-overdue creation, the Deodorant Removing Sponge, from the masterminds who brought us Hollywood Fashion Tape, removes those unsightly yet unavoidable ugly white marks that inevitably end up on dark bridesmaid dresses – or tuxedos from all the hugs the gents receive. Not only does this fabulous little sponge take care of deodorant marks, but it can also erase most make-up powder along necklines. This is one little go-to that is small but mighty!

These are just three awesome items we offer at our West Plano Bridal Salon. Stop by to browse our extensive collection of accessories, gifts, books and more! Come in during our January Cheep Cheep Clearance Event to save big on these little gems!

Guest Book Alternatives

Traditional guest books are a nice idea, but why not take it to the next level with a fun and more involved way to have your guests wish you well?!

Wishing tree
Wishing trees are beautiful and can serve as one of the focal points at your reception. On a table usually in the cocktail hour area, you have a tree from which note cards hang for guests to write a sweet message for the couple. The notes can be small rectangles, squares or circles, or they can be shaped like leaves, further adding to the “tree” effect. You can later store your sweet mementos in a memory box to be enjoyed for many years.

Photo booth
Photo booths are great fun! Some couples even like to provide crazy props to kick up the entertainment factor. Have a blank scrapbook, some photo-safe adhesive and pens at a nearby table for guests to attach their photo strip and write a message to you. The photo strips can also double as favors for your guests to take home when you encourage them to go another round in the booth!

Notes in a box or vase
Provide small blank cards for guests to write a well wish on and a lovely container such as a box tied to your theme or a gorgeous vase for them to put the notes into. You can later affix the cards in an album or leave them on display in their vessel in your new home.

Photo mat
While this alternative has been around for a few years, it is still a beloved option. Provide a photo mat around an engagement photo for your guests to sign with a short note. You’ll stop and read some of the messages every time you walk past this sweet keepsake in your home for years to come!

These are just a few ideas to get you thinking outside of the book. Do any of you have other suggestions?

Continuing Education, Vegas Style!

What happens in Vegas does not always have to stay in Vegas…Remember we shared with you here how important we feel continuing education is to keeping on top of our game as premier wedding planners? Well, we took a little jaunt to Vegas, Baby (couldn’t resist!), last month for an annual seminar by the international wedding planner association Weddings Beautiful. Not only was it educational and beneficial, it was also super-fun!

The interesting and entertaining seminar was held at the Legendary Bally’s on the strip, and the eight featured speakers have more than 160 years in combined experience in the wedding industry! In addition to enjoying the guest speakers, demos and roundtable discussions, we got to tour three of Vegas’ most infamous – and busiest – wedding chapels!

Rest assured, StarDust wedding planners are now fully equipped to handle planning a destination wedding in one of the most fun and unique cities in America! If you’re interested in learning more about planning a fabulous Las Vegas wedding, give us a call!

Here are a few fun photos to commemorate our time there.

Real Wedding: Smith-Penchan

What started out as a chance meeting at a birthday party for a mutual friend blossomed into a sweet romance full of dancing and hockey games! It was on the way to one of those hockey games that Hal Penchan got down on bended knee in front of Crescent Court to ask Lindsay Smith to become his wife.

Lindsay and Hal tied the knot on July 31, at the lovely St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Coppell. Lindsay wore a beautiful A-line lace gown with a ribbon sash while her bridesmaids wore their choice of three different full-length gowns of moss green. The ladies all carried charming bouquets of happy yellows and whites.

In a fun, impulsive move during the recessional, Hal swept Lindsay up and twirled her around for a sweet kiss halfway down the aisle!

Their ceremony was at 2:00 in the afternoon, followed by a break until the action continued at their reception at 7:00 that evening. The celebration was held at the gorgeous Grand Hall of the Texas Discovery Gardens in Fair Park. The yellow, white and green theme was continued in their décor, complete with lemons galore, a perfect accent for a hot summer night.

The couple and their guests enjoyed a delicious buffet from DC’s, then danced the night away to the high energy sounds of the fabulous party band, Signed Sealed Delivered. The groom even got up on stage and rapped to Juicy by Notorious BIG, followed by a crazy stage dive!

After the cake cutting, bouquet and garter toss and hours of dancing, the band’s horn section lead the happy couple out through a shower of rose petals for the limo to whisk them away for the night. By the way, check out the boots the bride put on for the party! They were specially made with the couple’s wedding date on the pulls!

Thank you, Lindsay and Hal, for choosing us to help make your wedding day dream a reality! We wish you a long and happy marriage!

Trend Alert: Short Bridesmaid Dresses

Graham Hobart Photography
Short and sassy continues to reign in the world of bridesmaid dresses. Brides are really embracing the trend of having their girls wear short dresses, which give off a fun, fresh and flirty vibe. While shorter dresses are less formal, they can still be very nice, and are especially perfect for daytime or more casual weddings.

The main thing to remember is that with a short dress, shoes matter! Be sure your bridesmaids look their best by having them all wear matching shoes. Something that matches the color of the dress or some simple neutral shoes like a metallic strappy sandal will go long way toward unifying your wedding day look and carrying your theme throughout every little detail!

Whitney Lee Photography

Visual Image Photography
One final comment.... please, please have your maids in long gowns if your wedding is more formal or after 6:00 p.m. Short gowns, while cute, are rarely elegant and you should think about your wedding photos in 10 years – how do you want to remember your wedding down the road?

StarDust is proud to carry many designers at both our West Plano Salon and LuLu’s in Uptown Dallas who offer beautiful and fun short bridesmaid dresses. Come by and see what we can do to help make your wedding day vision all you dreamed it could be!

The Value of Certification and Continuing Education

Most industries have professional organizations to provide members networking and continuing education opportunities as well as to hold them to a higher standard. The medical industry has the AMA, attorneys have their bar associations, and teachers have numerous professional associations. The wedding and event industry is no different. We have organizations that cover all categories of vendors, such as ISES (International Society of Event Professionals) and JWI (June Wedding, Inc.), but we also have an association made up solely of wedding planners: the American Association of Certified Wedding Planners (AACWP).

StarDust wedding planners are certified by and active members of the AACWP. This organization provides support, resources and networking, as well as continuing education for its professional wedding planner members. AACWP planners commit to adhere to the group’s strict code of ethics and have undergone a thorough application process, which included reference checks with former clients and vendors. When it comes to hiring someone to plan and execute the most important celebration you will ever host, do not skimp! Hire a planner that is educated, experienced and informed. In wedding planning, the saying, "you get what you pay for" really rings true and there is no chance for a do-over when it comes to your wedding!

The going rate for a certified wedding planner for “weekend of” or “month of” services averages around $2,000, while for full service you can expect to pay somewhere between $4,000 and $7,000, depending on the complexity and size of your wedding. If the rates you are quoted are significantly lower, look around. Be sure and get references from at least two former brides, and then CALL those brides to get their feedback on their experience with the planner and their perception of the planner’s abilities. Lastly, if someone says they are certified, find out by what organization and check them out. Unfortunately, many planners are not well trained, nor do they have the experience necessary to plan a wedding.

Learn more about AACWP certification and the organization’s rigorous membership standards at their website: http://www.aacwp.org/.

Real Wedding: Avots-Murphy

On a beautiful Austin day this past June, Kristin Avots married Kip Murphy in the historical All Saints Episcopal Church on the University of Texas campus. The stunning old church holds a special place in this bride’s heart as it was the same one her parents married in more than 30 years ago!

Kristin, an attorney, and Kip, a physician completing his residency in Temple, Texas, committed their lives to one another in front of 240 of their closest friends and family, including their large wedding party of 24!
The sweet green and yellow themed celebration continued at the Hilton Austin and included lots of details with a beautiful “M” monogram, a photo booth and a delectable candy bar in the fun theme colors. The bride’s father toasted the couple and spoke movingly about his parents, immigrants who had sacrificed everything for a better life in America.

The couple was sent off in a hail of white and yellow rose petals as they boarded a horse and carriage. We were honored to be part of this sentimental and fun celebration. Thank you Kristin and Kip for entrusting your special day to us! We wish you a lifetime of love and happiness!

Real Wedding: Kennedy-McElhaney

At the end of September, we had the privilege of orchestrating the fourth wedding (for four different daughters) in six years for the wonderful Kennedy family. Here is a sneak peek of photos from the special day from the wonderful Joseph Mark Photography.

Tracie married Chance McElhaney at the beautiful St. Andrews UMC in Plano, complete with a full musical celebration comprised of strings, a trumpet, an organ and the Texas Boys Choir.
The guests then celebrated the couple in grand style at the gorgeous Four Seasons in an elegant and romantic setting among dripping floral and crystals.
Tracie gave a nod to the fellas by allowing the phenomenal after party to carry a men’s lodge theme, including masculine mahogany furniture, an on-site cigar roller and a breakfast taco bar. Family and friends lined up to send Tracie and Chance off with flutterfetti and ribbon wands as the couple rode off on a golf cart trailing tin cans. The guests were then treated to a delicious cupcake favor to take home.

Watch this video from the fabulous Hakim Sons Films for highlights of the couple’s beautiful reception. Be sure to watch the whole video so you can check out the amazingly sweet toasts by the bride’s family!

Trend Alert: Spectacular First Dances

Photography by Vera
Whether driven by the wild popularity of “Dancing with the Stars” or the desire to do something different and unexpected, couples have started really kicking up their heels for their first dance as husband and wife.

Many couples take ballroom dance lessons simply to become more polished and confident on the dance floor, committed to avoid relegating this important moment to a memory as bad as the lame “junior high dance sway.” Still others are going as far as working with professionals to help them choreograph an over-the-top, sophisticated and awe-inspiring routine.

VIM Studios
No matter if you do it to merely avoid looking ungraceful at your reception or if you want to put on a grand show to remember, consider taking a few dance lessons with your fiancé before your wedding day. The right time to take lessons is about six weeks before your wedding day so you don’t forget what you’ve learned. Dance lessons are a great way to relieve stress and get quality time together amidst the wedding planning craziness, and it will give you something fun to do together for years to come!

Trunk Shows Explained

Sometimes we, who live and breathe weddings all the time, forget that terms and events that are common knowledge to us may not be so obvious to new brides embarking on their wedding planning journey. A bridal gown trunk show is one of these things.

Ubiquitous to the bridal industry, trunk shows are special in-store promotions or sales events when gown designers send their new line to stores for brides to preview, try on and order. Often, salons will offer a special promotion or discount during a trunk show. Bridal trunk show high season is January, February and March, and usually the designer will make a special appearance. This is a great time to snap a keepsake photo with the designer of your wedding gown! The designer will also sometimes provide complimentary special services such as “custom sizing,” extra length or a neckline change during their show.

The best thing about trunk shows is the opportunity to see and shop the latest wedding gown designs, straight off the runway. The down side to this is that the gowns are often the actual gowns worn on the runway by models, so the samples are generally small – a size 6 or 8.

By the way, you might be wondering how these events came to be called “trunk shows.” The name comes from how the gowns used to be transported from salon to salon – in trunks!
