Ask the Sylist: the Low-Back Wedding Gown

Q: I really love the dramatic look of a low-back gown and am leaning toward one for my wedding day. Are there any special considerations I need to think about?

A: In a word, yes! Low backs are stunning – simply beautiful and yes, very dramatic. BUT. If you are also interested in a very fitted waist, many low-back gown styles do not work very well. Because of the lack of material all the way around the bodice, there just isn’t enough there to get a super-tight fit.

Here are a few photos illustrating what we mean.

Claire Pettibone Provence gown

Wtoo Fiji gown

Now, all that being said, open back gowns are still a gorgeous option. Many styles are very flattering and can provide an hourglass shape, especially if you go with a keyhole or an illusion back. Here are a few examples:
Lazaro 3356 gown

Jim Hjelm 8359

Tara Keely 2354

Alvina Valenta 9357

But just a plunging back will just not give brides a super-snug fit. One other word to the wise: be cautious of a strapless gown with an extremely low back – you are risking a wardrobe malfunction! That’s probably not the memory you are going for on your wedding day!

Big Bang Theory Star Creates Buzz in Matthew Christopher Wedding Gown

You might have heard a little something about a stir that one gorgeous blond actress caused by posting a photo of herself in a wedding gown just weeks after becoming engaged. We are, of course, referring to the lovely Kaley Cuoco, aka hottie neighbor Penny on The Big Bang Theory, and her wedding gown-clad Instagram photo cheekily joking about getting married. The photo was actually taken on the set of The Wedding Ringer, which Cuoco is currently filming. The fun story and photo has circulated all over the entertainment blogosphere but was missing one vital bit of info – details on the gown!

Well, we at Stardust Celebrations are thrilled to share with you that the gown is none other than Sofia, by one of our incredibly talented designers, Matthew Christopher! Our North Dallas area bridal salon is the exclusive salon for Matthew Christopher bridal gowns in North Texas.

We have learned that in the movie, Cuoco will also don a few additional Matthew Christopher bridal gowns: Poppy Trumpet, Coco and Sabrina.

We are delighted to share with you that Stardust Bridal Salon carries these gowns! Stardust carries the identical version of Sofia and Poppy Trumpet, while we carry the A-line version of Sabrina (Cuoco will wear the trumpet version of Sabrina in the movie) and the more heavily beaded version of Coco, called Bianca.

Another detail to note is that the veil and jewelry the stunning Cuoco is wearing is from Haute Bride, by designer Lindsie Jones, another collection that we are pleased to offer you at Stardust!

Call us today at 972.781.1619 to schedule a time to check out our glorious collection of Matthew Christopher wedding gowns, or come by our West Plano salon to preview our Haute Bride jewelry!

Jewel tones are a hot trend for the fall! And why not?! Jewel tones bring in such a warmth and richness that they are perfect for cooler temps. Fall 2014 Bridal Market Recap

My, oh my…we die! We are in NYC for 2014 Bridal Market and as always, it’s a whirlwind of pretty things (that just may be the understatement of the year for us)!
We have been running from show to show, soaking in so much gorgeousness we can scarcely breathe! We are seeing some FAB-U-LOUS trends that we know you will just love. Here are a few in no particular order other than how they are tumbling out of our brains!

Beautiful Beading
Designers are really using beadwork and crystals in beautiful new ways. Some of it is dramatic and intricate while some of it is understated sparkle, but make no mistake – it is all stunning! Here’s a peek:

Statement Backs
Yes, the dramatic back is still a huge trend but incredibly talented designers are keeping it fresh with lots of illusion details, lace and beading. See what we mean:

Color
Color is still going strong. Again, the pinks and soft earth-tones are quite prevalent but we’re seeing some new colors or color being used in embellishments or as accents more.
Watters

Lazaro
Gold is huge! A carryover from the vintage/art deco wave, elegant gold details are adorning gowns in metallic laces, subtle belts/sashes, embroidery, beadwork and even splashes of color on the gown. Check out the use of this rich metallic.

We’re also seeing lots of BLUE! From tiny touches of it to rich details to fully colored gowns, "something blue" is going to be big!

Black also continues to be a popular accent. It’s a great choice for a bride seeking the dramatic.

High-Low Hemlines
High-low hems are proving their staying power as a trend, and again, we’re seeing it in different ways. Love the different options with this fashion forward detail.

Lovely Layers
We love layers! They add interest and depth to a gown and are just plain romantic! And this season, they are everywhere! It seems all designers have embraced layer love and the results are stunning! Tulle, lace, organza, satin – it’s all getting the layered treatment.

Flowy Fabrics
Soft, romantic fabrics are a prominent feature of bridal gowns this season! The give the gown lots of movement and are definitely more romantic and feminine. Graceful and elegant, this classic feature is super-hot right now!

Delicate Details
We mentioned this above in beading and backs, but delicate details are abounding! They’re softer, more romantic and feminine. Sweet, dainty details are just beautiful, don’t you think?!

Fit-and-Flare/Mermaid/Trumpet
This silhouette that goes by oh-so-many names is still HUGE! It is so very flattering on nearly every body type and it works in many different fabrics! It’s beautiful when it’s done in sleek and simple silk satin, when it’s embellished and when it’s done in lace or tulle! Fit-and-flare is also very impactful when done with layers! Don’t you agree?

Sleeves and Capes
Yes, sleeves are still very now! And along those lines, we are seeing more capes and boleros/jackets. And most of them are sheer and illusionary in nature – lots of lace, organza and tulle. So very elegant!

Lace
You probably noticed that without a doubt, lace is still a top trend in bridal gowns! The gorgeous fabric lends itself to so many different looks and we still cannot get enough of it!

Sparkle
Again, this ties in with the bead trend, but we are seeing so much sparkle on accessories such as belts, sashes and headpieces (of the vintage rather than tiara variety). This works great with a more understated gown, but can also hold its own with a more embellished gown, as well. Love it!

A word on Beauty
The models all look so stunning! There are some definite beauty trends on the runway that we fully expect to see at weddings! The look we have seen the most so far is a subtle, natural face with either smoky or gilded eyes and statement lips! And the lips seem to be in shades of crimson, berry or bold pink. The effect is very striking!

And while braids are still everywhere, they are now more part of an updo rather than in a loose, hanging braid. And in addition to braided updos, buns are HOT! Whether low and looped (à la chignon) or full ballerina buns high on top of the head, these fabulous hairstyles are here to stay awhile!

We will continue to recap all the gorgeousness that is circulating at Fall 2014 Bridal Market! To stay apprised of the latest and greatest from us in real-time, be sure to follow us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook!
